Post-Doctoral Researcher Department of Music
21 Months, Fixed-Term, Whole-Time Post
Position Summary
A Post-Doctoral Researcher post in Ethnomusicology is available at the Department of Music in the School of Film, Music and Theatre at University College Cork. The position is funded by the European Research Council and is associated with the research project ECura. The researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr Lijuan Qian as part of a small team of community-engaged ethnomusicological researchers. Collaboration with local communities leaders and activists will be essential, and mentoring will be provided by an advisory group consisting of senior academic advisers inside China and worldwide.
ECura focuses on three ethnic minority communities (Yi, Bai and Miao) in Yunnan, SW China. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will carry out fieldwork among these population and keep in person or virtual communication with the community leaders of collaborative villages. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will also require maintaining project website (https://ecura.ie/) and database, working on the existing project database and contributing new data entries and content, along with other team members.
In the Application Letter, candidates are expected to outline how their interests and skills align with the ECura project – namely, previous community-engaged activity, familiarity with ethnic minority societies in SW China, language capacities, writing skills, website management experience and the ability to work and think independently.
The successful candidate will be expected to live in Cork, Ireland and become an active part of the research environment/network of the university more widely.
In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be placed on:
• PhD degree (awarded) in ethnomusicology, folklore or other closely related areas;
• The applicant’s knowledge of and record of active and ethical engagement with ethnic minority populations in SW China;
• Language capacities in English, Chinese, and ideally, familiarity to local accents of Yunnan populations.
• Evidence of excellent organisational and co-operative skills, and the ability to sustain academic collaboration within and across disciplines
Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association
Application Letter (max 2 pages single spaced) describing the applicant’s qualifications and motivation for the position
Curriculum Vitae (complete list of education, positions, and other qualifying activities)
Both documents must be in English.
Short-listed candidates will be invited to a virtual interview at UCC. Details of interview will be finalised at a later date. It is envisaged that the post will start on 1 Sep 2025. University College Cork is an equal opportunities employer actively working towards full equality of opportunity in all aspects of University life.
