We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher (PhD in Ethnomusicology or Cultural Anthropology) to join the ERC-funded project Islands in the Stream (I–STREAM) at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

Project focus
The project investigates the impact of climate-related disasters on music scenes in Caribbean cities (San Juan, Kingston, Havana), combining ethnographic fieldwork with analysis of live performance data.

Position details

  • Fieldwork location: Kingston, Jamaica
  • Start date: between 1 June and 1 September 2026 (depending on candidate’s availability and visa/permesso di soggiorno, if required)
  • Contract: 1 year, renewable up to 3 years
  • Salary: approx. €40,000 gross/year (approx. €28,000 net)
  • Fieldwork costs: fully covered (including per diem)
  • Host: Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice
  • Residency in Venice: optional (except for an initial 2–4 week period prior to fieldwork)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct ethnographic fieldwork (minimum 4 months per year) in Jamaica
  • Produce high-quality scholarly publications
  • Contribute to workshops, public events, and collaborative project activities

Requirements

  • PhD in Ethnomusicology or Cultural Anthropology
  • Native or near-native proficiency in English
  • Strong publication record and fieldwork experience on relevant themes.
  • Open to applicants of all nationalities
  • Italian is not required
  • The position does not include teaching.

Research environment
The fellow will join an interdisciplinary team including the PI (who conducts research in Puerto Rico), a research fellow working in Havana, a film crew collaborating across all field sites, and a media development team based in Bologna. The fellow will be supervised by the PI and the project advisory board (Prof. Sonjah Stanley Niaah, Prof. Carlo Cubero, and Prof. Meriam Escudero).
