8th International Lisbon Meeting on Chinese Music and Musical Instruments, Lisbon/Mafra 7-10 May 2025, ‘Expanding Horizons’

Call for papers
We are pleased to announce the eighth edition of the annual Lisbon Conference on Chinese Music and Musical Instruments, scheduled to take place from 7 to 10 May, 2025 in Lisbon and in (nearby) Mafra, Portugal, this time with a focus on wider Asia.
The event will be hosted by the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) at NOVA University, Lisbon, in cooperation with the European Foundation for Chinese Music (CHIME), the Municipality of Mafra, and by the Confucius Institutes from the universities of Aveiro and Minho with the generous support of the Jorge Álvares Foundation, a key contributor to the promotion of Chinese music in Portugal since the conference’s inception in 2016.
In a new and exciting development, the upcoming conference will extend its focus beyond Chinese music and instruments to encompass the rich tapestry of music and dance from various Asian countries. This expansion offers a unique opportunity for researchers specializing in diverse Asian musical traditions to share their insights and discoveries.
As in previous years, the conference will feature a compelling blend of scholarly presentations and live performances, acting as a confluence of academic discourse and artistic expression. Alongside academic discussions, as in previous editions, attendees and the general public will have the opportunity to experience a curated series of concerts and recitals, showcasing the varied musical heritage of Asia and Portugal (the host country).

We cordially invite students, researchers, scholars, and artists in the field of Chinese and Asian music to submit proposals for either individual papers or panel discussions. We particularly encourage participation from academics, students and music
practitioners based in the People’s Republic of China and in other Asian countries, as their perspectives may shed new light on many topics through their ethnomusicological, musicological, and analytical approaches, and /or through their experience as practising musicians.
Join us in Lisbon for this unparalleled opportunity to explore, discuss, and celebrate the diverse musical traditions of Asia. Together, we will forge new connections, deepen our understanding, and contribute to the global appreciation of Asian music and dance in this emerging multipolar world.

The themes of the conference are as follows:
-Traditional and popular performing arts of Asia
– Heritages of Western music in Asia
– Chinese musical history, pre- and post-1949
– Chinese musical influences on Asia and Europe
– Asian musical instruments in Western museums
– Music, dance, and composition in Macau
– Music and dance in Asian diasporas worldwide

The extended Scientific Committee consists of: Enio de Souza, (INET-md, NOVA University Lisbon), Filippo Bonini Baraldi, (INET-md, NOVA University Lisbon), (François Picard, Institut de Recherche en Musicologie, Paris), Frank Kouwenhoven (CHIME, Leiden), Helen Rees (UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology, Los Angeles), Nicolas Prévôt (Université Paris Nanterre), Pedro Roxo, (INET-md, NOVA University Lisbon), Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco (INET-md, NOVA University Lisbon), Shao Xiao Ling (DeCA, University of Aveiro), Susana Sardo (INET-md, DeCA, University of Aveiro).
The Programme Committee consists of: Enio de Souza (Chair) Maria Teresa Lacerda, Nathália Andrião, and Pedro Roxo, all based at INET-md, NOVA University Lisbon.

The organizers will accept proposals for single presentations and panel sessions comprising 3–4 speakers. The maximum length of abstracts is 300 words for individual papers and 300 words for panel abstracts (individual abstracts for the panel must be limited to 250 words). Proposals may be submitted, and presentations given in English language. Each presentation must last 30 minutes, i.e. 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions and answers. Please, also send your short
bio, the maximum length is 150 words.

The registration fees for participation in the conference are €60,00 for researchers and €10,00 for the general public.
