The Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint a part-time (0.4FTE) Teaching Associate in Music, specialising in Ethnomusicology, with additional expertise in sound studies, postcolonial studies, and/or popular music from September 2019 for a period of three years. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Music or a cognate discipline with a well-developed track record in musicological research, particularly in the field of Ethnomusicology as well as experience of successfully developing and delivering teaching within Higher Education.

At the heart of a vast network of musical study, research and practice, the Faculty of Music is made up of 14 academic staff, 6 postdoctoral researchers, 12 affiliated lecturers and 16 support staff who work with around 200 undergraduates and 75 graduate students. As a world-leading centre of research the Faculty includes specialists in medieval and renaissance music, early modern music, nineteenth-century music, opera, popular music, ethnomusicology, performance studies, composition, and scientific approaches to music. The Faculty hosts the Cambridge Centre for Musical Performance Studies (CMPS) and the Centre for Music and Science (CMS). The Faculty facilities include a fully professional concert hall, a music library, a purpose-built studio and music computing facilities, as well as an impressive collection of historical instruments and a Javanese gamelan.

The successful candidate will deliver courses at undergraduate level and contribute to graduate teaching where appropriate. They will teach a second-year course, Introduction to Ethnomusicology, which currently includes modules on musical and sonic ethnography, history of ethnomusicology and an introduction to several non-Western musical repertoires/practices, as well as a practical component for students to carry out a small-scale ethnographic project. The appointee will also be expected to deliver one or more courses on an approved subject of their own choice, in addition to carrying out examining and administrative duties on behalf of the Faculty of Music.
