Malay Case Study, Musical Transitions to Colonialism in the Eastern Indian Ocean.

Applications are invited for a two-year Research Assistantship or Associateship on the European Research Council project « Musical Transitions to European Colonialism in the Eastern Indian Ocean », based at the Strand Campus, King’s College London. We wish to appoint a historian of the colonial Malay world (insular/peninsular Southeast Asia), with specific expertise in social and/or cultural history and extensive research experience in the British/Dutch colonial archives. The post-holder will contribute to the Malay Case Study (MCS), which is investigating transitions to colonialism in the Malay world in the field of performing arts. The Research Assistant/Associate will conduct original historical research on the changing relationship c.1750-1900 between Malay courts and European colonial powers using music, sound-art, dance and/or oral literature as a particular focus of social/cultural history.
